Chemical structure of kinetin from the 1955 paper. It reads: From the above and previously published evidence it was concluded that kinetin most probably is 6-furfurylaminopurine, I. The formula is C10H9N5O.

Eventually, Miller isolated 6-furfurylaminopurine from autoclaved DNA, which, due to its ability to promote cell division (cytokinesis), they called “Kinetin”. They also resolved the chemical structure. This was the first described #Cytokinin, and the second recognized #Phytohormone.

He named the mysterious substance #florigen (‘blossom-former’), suggesting it may be a #phytohormone. Hormones were just becoming 'en vogue', with Fritz Kögl describing and naming the first plant hormone, #auxin (greek for ‘to grow’), in 1931 (pic).

In the 1920s, work on #auxin as "growth substance" intensified, with Frits Warmolt #Went & Nikolai Grigoryevich #Cholodny both publishing a series of papers on the role of this first described #phytohormone. By 1926 both had determined that auxin plays a role in the plant's tropisms.

In 1935 William Crocker, Alfred Hitchcock,& Percy Zimmerman published more data on ethylene effects on plant growth & senescence, and first explicitly put it in one group with the other known #phytohormone, #Auxin, in their report “Similarities in the effects of ethlyene and the plant auxins”.

Excerpt from Ernest Henry Starling’s 1905 paper “The Croonian Lectures on the chemical correlations of the functions of the body”. ”These chemical messengers, however, or "hormones" (from greek, “I excite” or “arouse”), as we might call them, have to be carried from the organ where they are produced to the organ which they affect by means of the blood stream and the continually recurring physiological needs of the organism must determine their repeated production and circulation through the body.”

Ethylene is a gaseous #Phytohormone with a wide range of roles from #PlantDevelopment to #PlantImmunity. Ernest Starling in 1905 defined a hormone as mobile chemical messenger synthesized by a multicellular organism, that has physiological activity distant from the site of synthesis.
