Preprint servers are outgrowing their hosts and AI slop is making things worse. bioRxiv and medRxiv went independent last year. Now arXiv is leaving Cornell. 300,000 submissions a year and the costs keep climbing.

“Did you know?” announcement for bioRxiv and medRxiv. The text says “All bioRxiv & medRxiv preprints get a QR code” and “Great for posters and slideshows!”. Screenshots of the top right link section on a bioRxiv preprint with a box around the link for “Get QR code” (4th link on the second column). Also two QR codes with bioRxiv or medRxiv logo. The footer says: “bioRxiv and medRxiv are preprint servers of openRxiv.”
Easily share a bioRxiv or medRxiv preprint with a QR code! Find the "Get QR code" link on the preprint's page. These codes allow scientists to quickly access a preprint on their phones from a poster or slide.

It's happening again (already an issue in the #urban #heat literature: arxiv.org/abs/2509.16568).
#DataCenters can definitely create #heatislands, but using #satellite data would significantly overestimate the public health implications of it.
Also, can we not have news articles on #preprints?

bioRxiv Community Voices graphic featuring Christophe Leterrier, from the Neurophysiopathology Institute in Marseille (France) The post has a headshot of Christophe and the quote “bioRxiv has been invaluable in making my research accessible as soon as possible, and to regain agency over its publication—in the literal sense of making it public.” The footer says "bioRxiv and medRxiv are preprint servers of openRxiv."
Affiliate @christlet.bsky.social says that bioRxiv shows that coming up with usable alternatives with proper incentives is the better way to systemically change things.
Thanks to Affiliates like him, preprints post ~48 hours after submission.

New posting on #preprints, #PRC publishing, & why my present work in #MedComms has forced me to reassess what the pros and cons of preprints are in biological vs biomedical research. @elife.bsky.social @reviewcommons.org @asapbio.bsky.social @jacoates.bsky.social, I stand ready to be corrected...👇
The posting has a summary of the whole #PRC publishing model that #preprints facilitate, then consideration of how various features of preprints translate into advantages in biological sciences and…aren’t so helpful in biomedical science. 👆
New posting! I'm a huge #preprints fan, but in my work in #MedComms I’m slowly realising that many of the advantages of preprints don’t seem to apply in biomedical science. Read the posting, & tell me (please!) if you disagree…(warning:fairly long!)👇

SocArXiv paused AI submissions for three months, then released a formal policy. Their approach: human judgment only, no algorithmic detection, no AI-to-detect-AI arms race. That is community governance at work.

Announcement of a new Community Review on medRxiv (the preprint server for health sciences). A screenshot of the preprint page for “High-resolution characterization of nasal microbial dynamics in young children" by Hoving et al. (doi: 10.1101/2025.08.22.25334231) showing the Community Reviews tab in the Reviews and Context dashboard. A link to a review from Rapid Reviews Infectious Diseases is visible and highlighted with an arrow. The footnote on the image says "bioRxiv and medRxiv are preprint servers of openRxiv."
Community Reviews are science in real time! Check out this new and recent example of open feedback in action: Hoving et al.’s preprint just got reviewed by a community-organized group through Rapid Reviews Infectious Diseases!

Early-Bird Papers: Who Really Uses Preprints?
They are rising, but unevenly.
Global study shows physics still dominates. Some regions use preprints twice as much as others.
