Israel has ethnically cleansed Rafah and flattened it, erasing millennia of history
In 2024, after months of genocide in Gaza, the world's attention turned to Rafah, Gaza's southernmost city, which at the time was home to over 1.4 million people (70% of Gaza's population). The people of Rafah were joined by those forcibly displaced from their homes in Gaza City and Khan Younis. Global leaders, including the US President at the time, Joe Biden, who supported Israel unconditionally in its genocide campaign, said 'Rafah was a red line'.
Rafah, the flattened city at the southern tip of Gaza, has been ethnically cleansed by Israel in front of the world's eyes. The scale of destruction in Rafah, despite every warning, lays bare that what Israel has done in Gaza is a genocide, an attempt to ethnically cleanse the Palestinians from their land, just as they did in 1948. The continued flattening of Rafah must immediately be stopped, as it not only threatens any chance of Palestinians returning, but it also hides the crimes Israel has committed. We have no idea how many people's bodies have been left buried beneath the rubble, and Israel's systematic destruction of Rafah means we may never know the true scale of what they have done.
