Since our Cohort came together at the RSC we’ve had a lot to think about.

Director Amy Leach shared this brilliant thought:

"Removing barriers doesn’t undermine the freedom and privilege to fail. In fact, it makes braver work possible."

Being forensic with the data and making sure clear actions are in place for every child not yet through the reading gateway in our drive for Wave 6 schools. Thank you to everyone for your dedication and relentless focus on getting children reading. 📚✨

They didn’t drop out. They opted out—until they found programs that worked for them. This study is a wake-up call to how we design, fund, and talk about student pathways.

Happy New Year to all the @waltonhall.bsky.social visitors we gifted flowers to today. Wonderful reactions which warmed so many hearts on a very cold day and gave our gang a great confidence boost to start the year 🎉💐👏🏻

One side of a concertina style zine with pages entitled conferences, advising, mentoring, writing. There are stick figure of me doing this things.

The back page of the zine which says "but then consequences" consequences ends up backwards. And I'm lying on the floor with my coffee spilled. The front cover is visible which says "all the things".

We did a zine workshop as part of the #RemovingBarriers day.
Yesterday lots of people were so impressed with everything I do, but this shows the consequence of not having an off switch 😂

Spilled coffee on the floor.

So true! Hotdesking (and massive open plan offices) are one of the worst things to happen to the working environment.

Someone pointing out how awful hotdesking is for neurodiverse people. Only diagnosed people can get their own desk, and they have to disclose to get this...

I truly hate hotdesking.

On of the core outcomes people wanted to be "talked to, listened to, believed" - a few members of staff who do this can keep students engaged and attending.

But it needs to be more centralised so people don't have to keep advocating for themselves over and over.

Jamie talking through some of the outcomes of the project. Lots of simple things like - telling people they're about to test the fire alarms, helping make office more welcoming with lighting etc.

Also interviewed people, interviews were centred around participant needs. Pre interview discussion about what would be helpful - breaks, online/offline, prompt cards, types of questions.

Project set up an anonymous digital board but also physical postboxes where people could post drawings etc. Lots of posters etc. Around campus. Lots of engagement.

Posters talked about experiences rather than diagnoses e.g. "do you struggle with deadlines"

Where universities don't support staff to be open about their own neurodiversity, it leaves neurodiverse students unable to see that they can succeed and be supported.

Whether deliberate or not, this is a conversation the uni is entering into.

Looking at a new model if inclusive belonging. Shared responsibility framed by continuous dialogue between the students and different levels of the university.

Jamie taking us through some of the research of his partners on the project. Some interesting work about how autistic children were shown a different way to do school during Covid times, often a way that was much easier to access and take part in.

Wanted to avoid "admiring the problem" - foregrounding good practice and looking at what works, sharing and spreading good practice. #RemovingBarriers
