Today, 8 April, is International Romani Day. It's a day to celebrate Romani culture and raise awareness of the issues facing Romani people, an ethnic group that has suffered much and has been stigmatized and marginalized for far too long.

Age-old ethnic slurs are still used in everyday conversation.
Words matter. Let's be compassionate.

Another film adaption of Brontë's Wuthering Heights premieres in 2026. With an Australian Heathcliff.
Heathcliff was clearly Romani. When will we see an actor from the #romanipeople playing him?
Is Heathcliff being Romani controversial, and/or is this debated by contemporary literary scholars?
Did you know that some of the #romanipeople were slaves in Europe for about 500 years?
This is a poster from 1852: 18 men, 10 boys, 7 women and 3 girls, "in fine condition", are sold from a monastery(!) in Romania.

The #romanipeople were victims of the Nazi genocide during WW2 - just like the Jews.
Sometimes people don't seem to realize this.
Am I right?
The Romany and Travellers in the UK are closely related to the Scandinavian #romanipeople.
In 1505, king James IV of Scotland sent a letter of rec. to his uncle, king Hans of DK and Norway:
He asked him to welcome count Antonius Gagino and his entourage. They said they were from Little Egypt.
Our gov. tried to exterminate the #romanipeople (been in Norway since the 16. century).
Until 1989, they put them in labor camps, took children, split up families, sterilized women/children by force, etc.
This was mainly done by the "left-side" labor party, and after WW2.
My grandma was taken.
The norwegian gov put romanifamilies in the labor camp - Svanviken (1907-1989) (!)
They had to stay there for up to 5 years. If they left or broke the rules, they took the children.
Why? Because the gov did not accept their work and living - on the road.
They wanted to extermine the

Interesting! I know that making (and selling) beautiful paperflowers was (and is) an important craft for the #romanipeople. Some are still practices this form of art.
This knife was made by the swedish "King of knives", Johan Hedenberg (1869-1950).
It was recently sold for over 10 000 EUR(!) at an auction.
The romanipeople in the Nordic countries are famously skilled in different crafts.
Knives are an important part of the culture.
