An early 11thC stone carving of Christ on the cross, with the Hand of God reaching out to him, on the exterior wall of Romsey Abbey in Hampshire. Likely to have been a part of the Anglo-Saxon church, it was incorporated into what was once the cloisters of the Norman abbey #romsey #romseyabbey #saxon

The glorious Saxon rood carving in St Anne’s Chapel in Romsey Abbey. Dating to the 10thC, it may have been a gift from King Edgar when the abbey was refounded as a nunnery in the 960s. Edgar’s stepdaughter, St Aethelflaed was a nun there and later abbess #romseyabbey #anglosaxon
