Council share concerns about NHS integration with Palantir following public demonstration Councillors in Sheffield shared concerns about Palantir’s NHS contract at a meeting this week, following protests from a grassroots campaign group. The #NoPalantirInTheNHS South Yorkshire campaign is supported by Medact Sheffield and Healthworkers for a Free Palestine. The NHS Federated Data Platform, powered by Palantir, would organise information currently held by the NHS in different databases into one platform. However, concerns have been raised about data sharing, as well as Palantir’s links to the Israeli military and ICE operations in America. During a Health Sub-Committee meeting, members agreed the council should write to South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board “to seek assurances” regarding “appropriate safeguards.” Palantir previously said their software is “playing an important role in improving patient care.” Post Views: 318

A screenshot of public questions and statements to the Health Scrutiny Sub-Committee. From Rory Gibson.

Statement:
Since our last meeting, further concerns have been raised about the Federated Data Platform run by Palantir technologies, on its software, Foundry.
1) Palantir was confirmed to be supporting ICE agents in the US to track, deport and detain people, mining addresses from
Department of Health data, subsequently significantly harming human rights. Reform UK has promised an equivalent system,
including use of health data, in their policy, ‘Operation Restoring Justice’.

2) Over 50,000 patients have written formal complaints to their hospital leadership through the Good Law Project urging them not to use the FDP for their health data.

3) The British Medical Association stated in February that it will advise doctors to refuse to use elements of the FDP, with a view to moving away from the platform entirely

4) The Green Party of England and Wales announced it will use every means possible, including its members, to get the NHS contract cancelled and prevent the roll out.

5) Multiple MPs from Labour and Liberal Democrats have signed an early day motion condemning the NHS contract and urging the Secretary of State to develop British-based alternatives to Palantir so their NHS contracts can expire at the earliest possible date.

Palantir’s co-founder, Peter Thiel, believes that the NHS needs an approach where “you just rip the whole thing from the ground and start over” embracing “market mechanisms”. He says people who value the NHS, its ethos and its commitment to serve every person equally are just suffering from “Stockholm syndrome” – because everyone should know that “….welfare creates poverty, schools make people dumb and the NHS makes people sick”.

Flamboyant rhetoric in an unguarded moment?

No! CEO Alex Karp says the “core mission of our company always was to make the West, especially America, the strongest in the world.”
Palantir’s unethical “values” are shamelessly and copiously on record.

So too is the fact that the company is prepared to use its formidable data analytics, regardless of international law and human rights.

Its full-page advert in the New York Times proclaimed, “We stand with Israel” and Palantir has a contract with Israel “to harness Palantir’s advanced technology in support of war-related missions.” For absolute clarity, Palantir is a company servicing the state of Israel as it commits the crimes against humanity of apartheid, unlawful occupation and genocide.

This is why we don’t trust Palantir: it must not infiltrate and exploit the NHS

A screenshot of public questions and statements to the Health Scrutiny Sub-Committee. From Pearl Saatzer.

"The Israeli military has developed artificial intelligence systems, such as “Lavender”, “Gospel” and “Where’s Daddy?” to process data and generate lists of targets, reshaping modern warfare and illustrating the dual-use nature of artificial intelligence...There are reasonable grounds to believe Palantir has provided automatic predictive policing technology, core defence infrastructure for rapid
and scaled-up construction and deployment of military software, and its Artificial Intelligence Platform, which allows real-time battlefield data integration for automated decision-making. In January 2024, Palantir announced a new strategic partnership with Israel and held a board meeting in Tel Aviv “in solidarity”; in April 2025, Palantir’s Chief Executive Officer responded to accusations that Palantir had killed Palestinians in Gaza by saying, “mostly terrorists, that’s true”. Both incidents are indicative of executive-level knowledge and purpose vis-à-vis the unlawful use of force by Israel, and failure to prevent such acts or withdraw involvement."

This committee must ensure that South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board and Sheffield Foundation Trusts engage in robust scrutiny of Palantir Technologies during all procurement processes.

Palantir is a US tech company that works with the IDF, British and American militaries, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) and, since 2020, the NHS.

The company first partnered with the Government and NHS England during Covid-19. This raised early concerns about patient
privacy and data handling.

Subsequently, in November 2023, Palantir was awarded a £330 million contract to run the NHS’s new Federated Data Platform (FDP), aimed at linking data across hospitals and care systems nationally.

1. Palantir are an unacceptable partner – The NHS cannot partner with a company complicit in genocide & human rights abuses.

2. The FDP, especially with Palantir leading, will damage patient trust in health data & furthers capacity for state & corporate surveillance. There is no patient opt out.

3. The contract with Palantir also furthers the outsourcing, privatisation and asset stripping of the NHS. Monies should be spent instead, developing trusted and effective internal publicly-run data systems.

This Health Scrutiny Committee should formally recommend that the leadership of S.Y. ICB & all Sheffield NHS Trusts oppose plans to award any contract to PALANTIR.
