Photo looking downstream from the banks of a constructed wetland (also called an alcove) with slightly turbid, but calm water with the main stream channel (much more turbid - brown) at the top of the photo. Baby salmon use these habitats to rest & feed - especially important during flood events when the creek is ripping fast & dirty.
Similar view of the constructed alcove but from a closer vantage point to it's connection with the stream channel - there are three small, crystal clear waterfalls draining into the alcove on the far bank.
Even closer view of the alcove's confluence with the turbid brown main channel. The water clarity in the alcove is dramatically better then the stream & the waterfalls are in the background.
Photo looking downstream at the main channel - the creek is flowing extremely fast & is very muddy - Not good baby salmon habitat!!!! We need more off-channel wetlands to help boost salmon recovery & improve ecological health.
Visited our constructed wetland in a coastal stream during high flows. Incredible to see the turbidity & velocity differences in the wetland versus the main channel. I sure know where I'd want to be if I were a baby salmon♡ #SalmonRestoration #WaterfallWednesday #WetlandWednesday #Nature #Wetlands
