Book excerpt: Any first‑generation punks owning a 7” on Deptford Fun City Records (e.g. above) might find the view at this point oddly familiar. DFC was a label set up in the wake of punk by Miles Copeland III – brother of Police drummer Stewart Copeland and son of CIA operative Miles Axe Copeland Jr. – to release bands from Deptford: which in practice meant Squeeze and Alternative TV, the group led by Mark Perry, editor of seminal punk fanzine Sniffin’ Glue and KGB double agent.
Many of those who took advantage of the Crossfields Estate’s family‑unfriendly housing policy in the 1970s (p37) were artists and musicians. Chris Difford from Squeeze and Alternative TV’s Mark Perry (p14) both had flats here – Difford’s in Congers House (the birthplace, coincidentally, of Perry’s old Sniffin’ Glue mucker, Danny Baker) – and the flat you’re standing outside was home to Mark Knopfler and other members of Dire Straits, who first played live (as Café Racers) at the Crossfields Festival on 26 June 1977. Bands – including also Squeeze and Alternative TV – performed on a stage between the flats and the railway, with extension leads running from Knopfler’s bedroom powering the PA. Drinks were provided by the Oxford Arms (p99). Union Wharf (p82), please note, does not offer tenancies to those who’ve made running extension cables out of windows to power PAs core to their lifestyle. Dire Straits’ first gig as Dire Straits was a month later, supporting Squeeze at the Albany Empire as a benefit for the Tanner’s Hill Summer Playscheme. 70p admission. Late bar. Food and disco.

I often feel #SarahRecords gets a bit unfairly overlooked in the Bristol culture / counterculture narrative - what with our total failure to ever be cool - so I’m extra pleased we’re included in the lovely looking A Bristol Con Banksy, taking our rightful place between Massive Attack and Cary Grant.
We were incredibly privileged to release quite a lot of East River Pipe’s beautiful music on #SarahRecords - and then post-Sarah @uncharteredstreets.bsky.social handled the UK release of Mel. Love this record so very much and delighted it’s getting a 30th anniversary reissue on Merge. Hurray!
