Thanks very much to @saveladyislandlake.bsky.social
for inviting An Taisce's Dr Elaine McGoff as speaker to the event on nitrates pollution in Wexford.
It created a valuable opportunity for the local community to have conversations exploring solutions to this critical issue.
#SaveLadysIslandLake
It's so encouraging to get a full house for this event. It's also the first time local councillors and TDs have attended one of our public events. The conversation is detailed, respectful, and engaged. We need an evidence-based strategy to #SaveLadysIslandLake
Image of slide which states: Divide the catchment up into sub catchments, Monthly N and P sampling in each of the sub catchments (at least one sample per sub catchment), Combine that with flow to identify the hot spots for greatest nitrogen loss, Determine the pollution contribution from surface water and from groundwater.
Based on her expertise and experience and successful exemplars elsewhere, this is what Dr @elainemcgoff.bsky.social would suggest we start the process to #SaveLadysIslandLake

On one side of the screen nitrate and phosphate pollution. On the other the amount of derogation farms. A picture says a thousand words. #SaveLadysIslandLake

Senator Cathal Byrne and Peadar McDonald from Save Lady’s Island Lake campaign standing at the lake on an overcast day.
Our campaign were happy to welcome Senator Cathal Byrne of Fine Gael down to the lake last week. We discussed options for ensuring transparent action and the role of farmers in working to #SaveLadysIslandLake. Senator Byrne is the first Government Oireachtas member to engage with us directly.
If you'd like to activate our politicians on the urgent need to address pollution and the climate emergency, a great place to start is with signing our petition to #SaveLadysIslandLake.
Let's show our representatives that we expect more!

Coverage of @rodericogorman.bsky.social and @malcolmnoonan.bsky.social’s visit to the Lake last weekend. We need political action not political sledging. We’re grateful to those who have engaged with us in good faith to #SaveLadysIslandLake

We were delighted to welcome Green Party Leader @rodericogorman.bsky.social and Senator @malcolmnoonan.bsky.social down to Lady’s Island Lake today to meet with our campaign group and commit to supporting us immediately and long term to #SaveLadysIslandLake
All talk, no action. This is an uninspiring response from the Minister to Deputy Whitmore. #SaveLadysIslandLake
The EPA's latest report on Ireland's rivers paints a depressing picture. Nitrate pollution of Irish rivers is getting worse.
We are still waiting for details on the action plan to #SaveLadysIslandLake

A blustery day for the pilgrims. Good to chat to the IFA Deputy President and the County Chairman at the roadside. It was a positive discussion and we had plenty of support from the public too. #SaveLadysIslandLake

A group photo of volunteers at Lady’s Island Lake holding a banner.
Our volunteers spent another day gathering signatures for our petition to #SaveLadysIslandLake. This time, at the annual pilgrimage. Lady’s Island is a site of religious significance for Catholics. We had many engaging and supportive conversations about how to ensure action is taken.
Unfortunately, plans are no good unless they’re actioned. This is something we know all too well in #Wexford. Decades of plans but no action. #SaveLadysIslandLake

A really productive day collecting signatures for our petition at the Fleadh Cheoil. We were joined by SocDems TD for Wicklow, Jennifer Whitmore who helped us gather signatures & had important conversations with the public. We got a great reception and the momentum is there to #SaveLadysIslandLake
We hope that local politicians start to communicate with us and get involved in our campaign and do what is right to work together to #SaveLadysIslandLake

They’ve known for forty years and have done nothing. We’re almost at the point of no-return and we can’t allow that to happen. Once it’s gone we can’t get it back. #SaveLadysIslandLake
