AI has supercharged scientists—but may have shrunk science Analysis of 41 million papers finds that although AI expands individual impact, it narrows collective scientific exploration

An amazing paper from James Evans and team: Artificial intelligence tools expand scientists’ impact but contract science’s focus, now in @nature.com

Implications for epistemic diversity in science.

Absolutely crazy but not surprising at all on how GenAI is affecting our information ecosystem.

A year ago, I came across a similar example of a preprint that was full of hallu-citations (linking it in the thread)

Gauge Symmetries for Efficient Zero- Knowledge Proofs of Transformers We introduce GaugeZKP, a symmetry-aware verification framework for Transformers that exploits the maximal gauge group of attention. For canonical models the maximal group is Gₘₐₓ = ((GL(dₖ))ʰ ×...

A paper that was likely generated by an #LLM with possible hallu-citations, received scores of 8/10 (poster acceptance level) from two of its three #ICLR (top ML conference) reviewers. (Un)fortunately, the third reviewer caught the issues and gave it a zero.

How FAIR is shared data in psychology?

We analyzed 11,384 datasets (2013–2024): They're findable, but less reusable!

What relates most to differences in FAIRness? #Repository choice.

1/7🧵Ignoring race, gender & income doesn’t deliver fairness—it deepens inequity. 🚫
Policies that erase demographic data in admissions don’t level the field. They hide barriers and advantage those already holding resources. Check out the evidence below!

An important piece on #AI generated #preprints and why it's important to consider their impact on scientific ecosystem.

In that spirit, within #SciSci, critiques of navel-gazing may often target those studying people (e.g., retracted scientists, postdocs, students, academics) rather than processes (e.g., peer review, idea generation).

The spillover from events like this extends beyond a single paper. When a high-profile study like this is withdrawn, especially one that was widely discussed and covered, it has broader implications. This study had an Altmetric score of over 130.

Case in point the increasing prevalence of puzzle-solving & mop-up work around “Can GPT do X”. Has a “general purpose” instrument ever in the history become such a wide-spread object of study, disrupting what gets studied, who gets to & how?

there was a weird gap in the #SciSci literature studying #postdoc careers at scale, as the commentary above has rightly pointed out.

But this is just a start. Hope there are more in-depth studies on this understudied and rather a very important topic.
