or that moment before it breaks.
A band can be stretched
over a small box
and twanged.
This is a memory:
I held a rubber band in my fingers
pinched it at different points
and, enthralled,
I'd pluck, and listen.

I used to love the sound
of car wheels driving over rain,
the calming whoosh of it
replaying in my brain
now I don't notice it the same,
as if time has worn out
the magic in simple things
but when you hold my hand
in that sublime calm—
I hear car wheels,
