So you're an artist in the age between the mass spread of media and cheap production (xerox), and the start of adoption of the internet. You're an artist that makes their way in the world by selling spot editorial illustrations to magazines-- it's hard to fill up an entire spread with words, and sometimes illustrations pair with concepts way better. You realize you have a whole backlog of little illustrations that aren't doing anything now, but maybe someone will make use of them. So you submit them to a company that licenses them out in big catalogs, and they keep track of who uses what, and send you some money back when it's used.
Except sometimes clients don't want *the* perfect illustration, they'll take one that looks a little rougher if it's cheaper. And you're not the only one doing this-- more and more people do the same with rival, or even the same, companies. And to save a little money, the cheaper art gets picked. so you lower rates. or someone lowers theirs. And between the postage costs, pre-internet, and bookkeeping and check writing, there's an angel share of money being lost. Despite demand and supply rising in volume, everyone's making less money, so they spend less money. , and the people who really make bank are just undercutting to get to the top of the list.
Now let's add in the internt-- wher you can just see an image, save it, use it. there's no agency to enforce your licenses, *their* cut of things. Stuff just ephemerally appears, no need to think about where it's from, and as long as the court costs of getting sued are higher than the possible returns, you can do it without worry.
Soon, the art grads that started submitting clipart are ADs because they honed their skills, but they may or may not be able to retire. So the art grads that couldn't survive by selling clipart just stay in the same entry level positions, never getting the higher training and experience they need. And that means the NEXT batch of grads won't even find a job.

App is Penly, font is Zai Smoth Corona. I always disliked how #illu or #seqa industry knowhow was passed orally in classes. My OG senior project was a series of essays on commercial art culture, and the prof said he didn't believe i could do it. We need to know we've been here before. (see alt text)
