#Alaska, called #SewardsFolly, was purchased for the United States from #Russia on #ThisDayInHistory in 1867 by Secretary of State William Seward. Dismissed at the time as a frozen wasteland with no value to the US, Seward earned the last laugh once gold and oil were found there.
You know the ghost of William Seward is watching this meeting closely.

I think that if I were an Alaska resident I would be very worried about being given BACK to Russia. Maybe for like 11 million $.

Putin maneuvers Trump into meeting to discuss Russian territorial re-acquisitions in Alaska (Perhaps Sarah Palin needs to remind Trump that she can see Russia from her porch.) #SewardsFolly f24.my/BMQQ.X via @FRANCE24
Trump's meeting with Putin in Alaska next week?
What are the odds he gives it back to Russia...

Canada never owned Alaska.... we bought it from Russia #sewardsfolly
The thing is: none of the ostensibly rational make any more sense than the obsession itself. Take the Northwest Passage: if the aim is to thwart Russian or Chinese influence in the region, why would we need to "buy Greenland"? Wouldn't Alaska serve that purpose even better?
