James Mercer, lead singer of the Shins, is 55. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on Dec. 26, 1970, Mercer later lived in New Mexico and formed indie-rock band the Shins in Albuquerque in 1999. The Shins have released five full-length albums to date, and in June 2026, they’ll mark the 25th anniversary of their debut album, Oh, Inverted World. In 2009, Mercer and Danger Mouse formed the experimental project Broken Bells, who released their third album, Into the Blue, in 2022.
