A series of bamboo strips, such as were use anciently to write book in Asia, with a series of characters written on them. Some are very new, others have clearly been weathering for many years. BW photo.

If i understood properly - when Japanese people are buried, part of the Shintō ceremony is to give them a new name to help them adapt to their new status, and every year on a special day set aside for the purpose, new strips of bamboo inscribed with it are placed near their grave. My respects to the person buried here. (Of course if I'm wrong, or this is inappropriate, please let me know!)

So people can worship two religions - #Buddhism and #Shintō - and it’s fine. These two major religions in #Japan are complementary to each other, not mutually exclusive. Such a wonderful concept. Creates peace and harmony.
