GENERAL IDEAS E-ki wakes up from his coma. He does NOT entirely want this. guy who much would have preferred either death or living in his memories for the rest of his lifetime over being conscious and forced to cope with the reality of his friends being dead Coma and/or traumatic brain injury complications. there's a lot of these disclaimer: I'm an able-bodied person who doesn't have a history with long-term physical impairment. I've tried my best to portray disability for E-ki in a realistic and respectful manner, but if there's anything you think I should change, let me know severe muscle atrophy from disuse. He likely stays in a rehabilitation center for several months and receives physical therapy both during and after his care. and even then, his muscles will never recover to the same state they were prior to the incident he uses mobility aids to help him move around. he uses a wheelchair during early recovery, and then transitions to using forearm crutches after he regains enough strength in his arms long-term TBI complications memory problems. both short-term and long-term. especially noticeable for E-ki when it comes to trying to recall events prior to the incident. more on that later motor impairment. has to gradually relearn a lot of fine motor skills after the incident. still struggles a bit with hand-eye coordination by the time of rptwt susceptibility to psychiatric problems. already a given from the consequences of being traumatized by the incident, but a TBI contributes to it further one thing's for certain: he's a lot less energetic than before! I mean, E-ki's not quite the same person he was pre-incident for various reasons. He's notably quieter, moodier, and prone to depression. his physical energy levels also aren't nearly as high as they were before. he experiences fatigue more often

okay, time to expand more on his psychological state. there's a lot going on there. Expectedly, it is very difficult for him to initially see the value to living in reality, 10 years later. there's a lot of strategies he initially adopts to cope. these begin to decrease in frequency as he heals and becomes more accepting of his situation later on post-coma E-ki strikes me as the type of person to be really "gullible", but in the sense that when presented between two possibilities of truth for a stressful situation, he'd much rather believe the less emotionally painful option, no matter how unrealistic it may be. i.e. if an idea is more appealing/ideal/happy in his eyes, his brain would rather believe that than a more painful truth his brain does a lot to protect him from unpleasant truths, or to protect the idea that those days he spent with his friends truly were "perfect" in his mind, barring the obvious tragedy he doesn't tend to be very grounded to reality in general. I feel like post-coma E-ki would be very prone to dissociation, as well as any external suggestions that something is Not real (addendum: hypnotic susceptibility) dissociation being an especially common mechanism that brains can adopt after trauma! worsened by the fact he's surrounded by constant reminders and stressors E-ki tries to nap A Lot, whether it's out of desperate hopes of seeing his friends again in his dreams, or if it's just to escape reality and the passing of time in general to his frustration, most of the time, he's dreamless. when he does dream, it's usually a nightmare, often of: the film club's corpses false awakenings. dreams inside dreams inside dreams inside dreams experiencing long stretches of time that end with everyone else dying

Grief is of course, a major thing E-ki has to deal with! 10 years of his life were spent in the first stage of denial, living in a repeated, perfect fantasy where nothing would go wrong until the very end being awake, he can't deny that the film club is dead anymore, that's for sure. however, this doesn't stop him from being neurotic about it E-ki can't seem to escape the past. the film club's absence haunts him evidently, and reminders of his friends plague him no matter where he goes. he misses them. His heart aches for them deeply, and it's the strongest feeling he knows. He's seized by homesickness, because to him, the film club was like a home to him. They were his everything. When he shuts his eyes for too long, images of the film club's corpses flash into his mind. he sees that same nightmare, playing over and over again. he can't seem to avoid or forget it, which distresses him greatly Survivor's guilt for sure! he does not believe he deserves to be alive. he has a lot of complicated feelings regarding this I suppose it's good it's not like he's alone in his grief (W-sensei) I haven't thought too much about what their relationship post-canon would theoretically be like, but I'd imagine there would always be an air of sadness in their interactions E-ki would probably ask him a lot about the film club in his attempts to remember more about them, which brings me to talking about...

Long-term memory issues. lot of stuff going on with these. E-ki doesn't reliably remember many things from pre-incident in general, which leads to problems Film Club He has difficulty remembering the FC members' names and faces. unfortunately, he remembers them best by their deaths, and due to the particular states of their corpses, he finds it much harder to remember A-no's and B-ka's faces than C-na's and D-suke's he struggles to recall details of his happiest memories with them, the members' specific tastes and quirks, etc. this ends up fueling his neurotic grief-driven habits He quickly becomes obsessed with the notion of preserving the memory of the film club as much as possible. he begins to collect and study any mementos he find from the past relating to the FC, including the photos that W-sensei took of them at the school festival. E-ki studies them intensely, trying to carve every detail of their faces and their expressions into his memory. he keeps a journal to write down as many things he remembers or finds out about the film club as he can. Everything possible. descriptions of their appearances, their names, specific memories like the festival events. it soothes him to an extent, but on the other hand, he gets really distressed noticing how much is missing. how much he's forgotten if he ever manages to encounter the audio commentary tapes or copy of the film, I don't think he'll want to part from those ever again.

it took me like a month or two but i finally wrote down my main ideas for general post-coma interpretation. note that this was mainly written with my e-ki twitter rp account's context in mind (1/2)
