Cross Your Heart Thanks to Hannibal’s almost absurdly efficient filing system, it didn’t take him long to retrieve the letter that he had been seeking. It was still nestled inside a plain white envelope, the edges of which had been neatly shorn with a letter opener several years prior. He considered his memory to be immaculate, and yet, even when presented with the evidence before him, he felt strangely betrayed by the knowledge that he had once agreed to an arrangement that he had simply never expected to pass. Hannibal Lecter did not have many close relationships; however, that had never prevented people from seeing his affability as something deeper and more meaningful than it actually was. For the most part, that had always served to be beneficial, the matter of allowing others to believe that they had some sort of special connection with a man otherwise so elusive. In this case, it had proven to be nothing more than dreadfully inconvenient. He carefully unfolded the letter, placing it neatly on his desk, aligned perfectly next to the one that he had received that morning. Even their handwriting was similar, though the new letter’s penmanship had a slight clumsiness to it, reflected in the wording that could only be described as impatient. Dr. Lecter, My Father has died. He kept a record of all of his correspondence. 23 years ago, you wrote to him that you would provide guardianship for his only son. He left his attorney with a copy of your address to be provided to me in the event of his death. I looked up your property on Zillow, and I saw that no one else has bought the house, so I assume you still own it. I also see that it has many bedrooms, and you have no children. My cab from Penn Station will arrive at your house at approximately 8:30 PM on Tuesday, 11th November. Regards, Adam Raki
