Greenhouse gases reduce the satellite carrying capacity of low Earth orbit - Nature Sustainability Satellites have become integral to our everyday life, but space debris threatens the sustainability of low Earth orbital space. Greenhouse gases are complicating the problem, leading to longer orbital retention of defunct satellites and increasing the risk of collision.

Climate crisis limits the number of satellites in Low Earth Orbit, because of decreased density and drag in the upper atmosphere. Space junk stays up there for longer.
