A cascading waterfall flowing over moss-covered rocks in a lush green forest. The water tumbles down multiple tiers, creating white froth and contrast against the dark, wet stones. Tall grasses and vibrant green vegetation grow along the edges, while a steep rock face rises on the right side of the frame. In the background, a taller waterfall spills from a narrow gap in the rocks, partially framed by overhanging branches and dense foliage. A few fallen branches rest in the stream at the bottom.
Roughlock Falls in #SpearfishCanyon, the #BlackHills of #SouthDakota. The drive to the trailhead is spectacular, the hike is amazing, and then this. If you're a #birder, you might know Spearfish Canyon as th easternmost spot to reliably see American Dipper. There's usually a pair at the falls.

A frozen Bridal Veil Falls is a 60' high sheet of white ice. People are playing on it and attempting to climb it.
Spearfish Creek meandering through snow and pine trees. A snow covered rock sits in the middle of the creek. Although this photo doesn't show them we saw several anglers fishing today. Because the creek moves so fast it doesn't freeze over.
The Latchstring Restaurant, a more than 100 year old brown, log-style rustic building nestled into the tall, brown rocks of the canyon.
We drove through Spearfish Canyon today, in South Dakota's Northern Black Hills. The ancient walls are as high as 1,000 feet. The roadway follows the path of an old railroad that was washed out. There is an explanation with each photo.
