“In the face of direct political pressure, The Associated Press held the line for ethical journalism,” said Emily Bloch, SPJ national president. “Rather than compromise its editorial independence by backing down, AP stayed true to its principles and continued serving the public with unbiased reporting. That is the very definition of ethical courage.”

The Society of Professional Journalists and a coaltion of organizations dedicated to supporting and advancing journalism released a statement to affirm the vital role of ethical reporting in our democracy. SPJ has designated April 14-18 as Ethics Week to serve as a reminder of the responsibilities journalists carry and the standards that guide their work. It is also an opportunity to emphasize that ethical journalism is not a political act; it is a public service. SPJ plans to send the statement to all members of Congress.

“At a time when government actions and rhetoric increasingly seek to undermine and delegitimize principled practitioners of our profession, we call on policymakers, community leaders and the public to recognize and defend the critical importance of ethical reporting,” the statement says.
