This poem's ending references the 3rd anniversary art for Star Allies, in which the Mage Sisters and Hyness all celebrate with Kirby on a shore together, that they can live again, free from religious devotion, free from Termina, and free from the pain they brought on each other.
We are leading into the final boss of Star Allies in the next poem, and I wanted to do this small sub series to appreciate the Kirby game that helped me love the series again, through connecting and bonding over it with @nanrait.bsky.social 💖
Hyness is a venerable wizard who conceals himself in a white robe with long trailing sleeves and a veil that covers his face, such that only his beady yellow eyes can be seen. While his shape and motions would suggest he has limbs, these are never seen from under the robe, which makes it entirely possible that he does not have any. Hyness leads a host of subjects, the most prominent of which are The Three Mage-Sisters: Francisca, Flamberge, and Zan Partizanne. When his hood is removed, he is revealed to have a blue face, blue and yellow striped ears, and eyes that move independently of each other like those of a chameleon's. Aside from the huge nose, Hyness's face (particularly his ears) has an uncanny resemblance to the shape of Magolor's head. This page, and the subsequent pages, show how heavily they changed through the design process, where they were once much more nun-like in appearance, where they are now more of a mix between militaristic and religious.
The mages resemble stylized humanoids with disembodied hands and no visible feet. Each is dressed in a stylized depiction of a nun's habit, decorated with hearts; atop their heads, each wears a large cap similar to a military black beret bearing their signature symbol. The area where their necks and mouths would be are covered by a kind of neck gaiter. The character designs and names of the three mages are directly based on their weapons: a francisca (a throwing axe), a flamberge (a sword with an undulating blade), and a partisan (a type of polearm similar to a spear). Of course, where they ended up, they use the three primary colours, Red, Blue and Yellow, but we can see here they even had some purple in their designs too!
I particularly like the roughs on the second row, the second group of three on the second row to be exact, and how different Mage Sisters have differing coverings on their face, in contrast to their uniform mouth gaiter in their finalised designs.
Despite the word "sisters" in their group name, they are implied to be unrelated by blood; the word "sisters" also refers to the concept of a religious sisterhood. While this mystery is not given a definitive answer, with the Kirby Star Allies Channel playing it up, their pause screen descriptions in the Soul Melter EX difficulty of The Ultimate Choice describe how they were separate individuals who were each rescued from certain death by an anonymous figure (later confirmed in an interview to be Hyness) and imbued with the powers of the elements which would have killed them. Meta Knight appears in the intro cutscene for Kirby Star Allies, dusting off his sword before witnessing Jamba Heart pieces rain from the sky of Popstar. At some point, he is corrupted by a piece of the Jamba Heart, and Kirby is forced to fight him as the boss of Sacred Square. Upon his defeat, Meta Knight is freed from the Jamba Heart piece's corruption and becomes a playable Dream Friend.
It is later revealed in Heroes in Another Dimension through Parallel Meta Knight's special page that prior to the events of Story Mode, Meta Knight was at Sacred Square to protect its residents from the raining Jamba Heart pieces before getting corrupted himself. The Japanese, Chinese and Korean versions also state that after Meta Knight was saved by Kirby and friends, his thoughts and the Jamba Heart possessing him went to Another Dimension and created Parallel Meta Knight. Kirby will be forced to pick up the Sword ability before fighting Meta Knight, like in the older games in the series. In the following two situations, however, Meta Knight will become irritated and kick away the sword, featuring a different splash screen:
If Kirby doesn't take the sword and waits for a certain amount of time;
If any player steps onto or attacks the
platform where Meta Knight stands.
Meta Knight often guards so that he takes no damage at all, often signaled when he takes a defensive stance. His sword-based attacks can be interrupted by the Sword ability (including Friends like Blade Knight), which creates a sword clashing effect and stuns him for a bit.
When his health is at approx. 60% of his maximum, Meta Knight surrounds himself with a purple force aura under the influence of the Jamba Heart piece (he takes 0.2× damage during phase transitions). In this phase, he begins with duplicating himself into up to four Meta Knights, depending on how many friends there are. The duplicated Meta Knights can also make boulders rain from the sky using the purple force.
Upon defeat, Kirby can optionally throw a Friend Heart at Meta Knight and make him a friend similar to King Dedede at the end of the Clash at Castle Dedede stage. Otherwise, Meta Knight's mask breaks and he flees with his cape.
