HL Tauri dust rings with gaps imaged by the ALMA array. ALMA (ESO/NAOJ/NRAO) 2014
We can interpret this amazing image of a forming solar system (HL Tauri, from the Alma array; ESO 2014).
Iron meteorites with #taenite and #kamacite domains forming a Widmanstätten pattern tell us that in systems like this or our own solar system […]

I made a
⏩symbolic vote⏪
for #taenite.
Sheesh, damned to speech to text, argh.
This time I managed to spot "symbolic boat," and correct it.
#mincup25
tbh I love #kyanite and felt sure It would win so I made a symbol of for #taenite because it is also cool.
It's kind of like how I sometimes vote in #California presidential #elections knowing how the electoral college is going to go anyhow.
#mincup25
Too bad about the way things are going in #MinCup25 I had a really good meme for #Kosmochlor vs. #Taenite - a classic, you might say.
With a spot in round 3 on the line, the stakes are high today for Cup veteran #kyanite and first-timer #taenite.
Our analysis: Taenite can be spacey and might lose focus during match, whereas kyanite can take the pressure and keep sparkling. It has our vote! #MinCup25
Meteorites FTW! #Taenite
#MinCup25 Round 2 Match 7: 💙 #Kyanite vs ☄️ #Taenite. A metamorphic aluminosilicate meets a meteoritic Fe–Ni alloy.
#minerals #mineralogy
I mean, look at this patterning.
Just incredible! #Taenite
bsky.app/profile/corg...
#MinCup25 R2M7 is literally heating up, be it from the high temp/pressure #kyanite forms under or the incredible tempature atmospheric entry that #Taenite experiences, this one is HOT.
Pics below, because no one is highlighting the patterning that taenite is famous for!
#teamspace or #teamblue?
Why oh why must I choose between thou two? There are few who could swing me away from #kyanite, but #taenite is one of them. So I will (heartbrokenly) vote for the spacerock #TeamTaenite #MinCup #MinCup25
This vote is tough… but after sleeping on it, I’ve settled on making another exception to my ‘vote blue’ rule—it’s #Taenite, which produces the gorgeous Widmanstatten patterns in meteorites!
#MinCup25
#MinCup25 yall should vote for #taenite so it can go against #kosmochlor in the quarter finals and we can decide which is the top meteorite mineral
Kyanite is cool, but it's not "literally from the core of a small planet" cool, or "makes beautiful geometric patterns when polished and etched" cool, or "travelled through space as part of a meteoroid for a billion years or so" cool - so this one is an easy one for me: vote #taenite! #MinCup25
This is the hardest choice for me yet -- I have to go with #taenite here because Widmanstätten patterns are my favourite material phenomena (what better collision of my materials science and astro engineering backgrounds?) #MinCup25
Look, I loves me some meteoritic, space circuit board #Taenite, but I think if #Kyanite doesn’t win this round of #MinCup25, this sample below from the Smithsonian is going to come to life and, lets just say, open up a can of Big Blue Bust-Up.

I'm just a big fan of #kyanite. I have been for a long time. But that said, I don't know anything about #taenite, and shouldn't I learn about it before I vote?
#mincup25
En el 7mo juego de la 2da ronda de #MinCup25 se enfrentan la Cianita #Kyanite y la Taenita #Taenite. Uno proveniente de la profundidad del planeta tierra y otro del espacio.

Yo elegí Taenita
#MinCup25 Round 2 Match 7: It's high-pressure #kyanite against deep-space #taenite.

Taenite meteorite with criscrossed metal patterns.
The first #taenite meteorite I ever held - it was heavy, the size of my hand and it blew my mind that it CAME. FROM. OUTER. SPACE. (pic formatted for @jbinnacle.bsky.social but it's been a busy day, I can't find another one)

An impromptu photo of a slab of the Tambo Quemado iron meteorite (Peru) with a Canadian quarter for scale (23.9mm). The meteorite shows the Widmanstätten pattern.
Figure 1 from John Wood's 1964 Icarus paper showing the increase in the taenite-kamacite two-phase field with decreasing temperature. It also shows the idealized Widmanstätten pattern at two temperatures.
The solid-state diffusion of iron and nickel into #taenite and #kamacite domains forms the Widmanstätten pattern in iron meteorites. The growth of these domains has been calibrated with temperature.
The meteorite pictured (Tambo Quemado, Peru, type IIIB) […]

Our #MinCup25 pick today is #taenite, found in meteorites and an ingredient in Widmanstätten patterns—a distinct criss-crossing design formed in the vacuum of space!

Both are cool minerals, but only one is in my wedding band. Gotta love the Widmanstätten patterns. #taenite
Look, since my wife is a sculptor, I’ve got nothing against clay & #nontronite is pretty neat-o. Yet, #taenite is in meteorites, shows those great Widmanstätten patterns (look like alien computer chips to my sci-fi brain!) & is a possible peak into Earth’s core. I’m Team Space Rock here. #MinCup25
Crosshatching on a silver background you can note the Widmanstätten patterns that form a circut board like pattern across the surface.
Another fantastic example of the Widmanstätten patterns that appear as etched triangular formations that are interleaved across each other.
This is another example of Widmanstätten patterns on Taenite. This shows some heat stress in the center where the normally straight lines were morphed by heat/pressure stress.
An excellent example of taenite with the Widmanstätten patterns that is a return to the very straight and angular patterns it produces.
#Taenite is a major constituent of iron meteorites. In octahedrites it is found in bands interleaving with kamacite forming Widmanstätten patterns (which are all the photos!)
Taenite is a mineral found naturally on Earth mostly in iron meteorites. It is an alloy of iron and nickel.
#spacerocks
Penultimate Rond in Round 1 of the #MinCup25 #R1M15.
SPACEROCK #taenite vs the clay #nontronite
Gotta choose #teamspace in this contest, only because Kaolinite did so well last year.
Check out pics and info below for why!
I'm 100% team #taenite. As a main component of iron meteorites I've studied, taenite is more than just a cool space metal. It's nickel composition and presence in Widmanstätten patterns can indicate the size and cooling rate of the asteroid core it came from! #MinCup25
#MinCup25 Round 1, Match 15: 💫 #Taenite vs 🌍 #Nontronite. An iron-nickel meteorite alloy meets an iron-rich clay mineral.
#minerals #mineralogy
#taenite has a cool artsy design on its surfaces but #nontronite went with just a green blobby. I think the decision is obvious.
(picture stolen from the voting page)
#Taenite is a space rock.
#Nontronite is common clay.
...Clay isn't common. It's fascinating, and fun. I'm voting for nontronite.
