They didn't just rewrite history. They staged a coup and made sure no one talked about it. Wilmington, North Carolina, was once a thriving majority black city. Black men held office. Black people ran businesses, published newspapers, owned land. It was working. But in eighteen ninety eight white sp premised saw that as a threat. So they formed a mob over two thousand strong and planned an attack. Armed and organized. They marched into Wilmington and burned the black - owned newspaper to the ground. Then they killed at least sixty black residents. Some historians say the real number is much higher, but no no one was allowed to count. They forced the mayor, city council and police chief, most of them black or pro black, to resign at gunpoint. Then they replaced them with white men who swore to uphold white supremacy. This wasn't a riot. It was a successful violent coup d'etat on US soil, the only one in American history. And it worked. Wilmington never recovered. Black families fled in fear. Businesses vanished, wealth erased overnight, and for over one hundred years textbooks called it a race riot. They buried the word coup to protect the lie. The US govern mint knew it happened. They didn't stop it. They didn't punish it. They let it become the blueprint for silencing black power. Follow, if this version of history feels closer to the truth, surprise me. If this is the first time you've heard it that broke me. Share Believe, inspire blacks be.
