He who stands on tiptoe is not steady. He who strides ahead does not go far. He who displays himself is not luminous. He who justifies himself is not distinguished. He who boasts achieves nothing. He who is proud will not endure. From the perspective of the Dao, these are called excess food and useless growths. They are detested. Therefore one who follows the Dao does not dwell in them.
