A very elaborate piece of fanart for The Book of Life. See the second image for more information about it.

A long text post. When I first saw The Book Of Life in theaters in 2014, it was just me and one of my friends in the theater. That day, my life and perspective on art was changed forever. The movie's art, music, sincerity, and love have stuck with me for years. I thought it was so beautiful that there was so much identity, culture, and enthusiasm poured into such a gorgeous collaborative project, and I've proceeded to show it over and over again to my loved ones for the past decade. TBOL is truly one of my favorite movies of all time. I've gone back and forth on making fan art for it for the same amount of time. What an intimidating task! How do I possibly convey my emotions? How do I show my respect and appreciation for such a masterpiece? I waited for too long, because I wanted to wait until I was "good enough" at art to do it any justice. After a while, however, I realized that "waiting to be good enough" was an injustice to the passion in which Jorge Gutierrez and his wife, Sandra, approach their creations. I have slowly been chipping away at this piece for many months. It became the drawing I would return to in between client work, where I could pour my love and energy into something indulgent that was just for me. I spent my time detailing every character, trying to get their designs as close to the truth as I could, while adapting them to my style. Reading about the character concepts gave me an even deeper love for this movie. I think some of my favorite things I learned involve La Muerte and Xibalba only having eyes for each other, the Candlemaker being a bell shape, the names on Pablo’s guitar, and Manolo wearing his heart on his sleeve. If you look closely, you can see that this drawing is also full of marigolds, dahlias, and Mexican poppies. I also drew the tiles by hand! THAT is how much effort and love I felt that a fan work for this movie deserved. One of my dreams is to someday print out this and bring it to a convention, if Gutierrez is ever at one that I am also working at. It would mean the absolute world to me to be able to bring it back home with his autograph on it. I have no idea how likely this is to happen, but maybe someday! Oh! Another exciting thing I can mention: Since 2015/2016, I have been on the hunt for a physical copy of The Book of Life concept art book. As of June 2025, I FINALLY HAVE MY HANDS ON ONE! I found a used copy at an affordable price online, and I could not be more thrilled. I have been looking through the pages, eating up all the art and words, happily kicking my feet. I am so happy I can finally add it to my library!!! I just wanted to share. xoxoxo Alex Barr/Dulceskull
