That’s the goal of this next phase of #The89Percent Project—to explore who these people are, why they feel the way they do, and what kinds of action they’d like to see. We think it makes smart editorial & commercial sense for the 89% to see themselves reflected in news coverage.
Study after study has shown that the vast majority of people, 80-89%, want governments to “do more” to address climate change. Understanding who these people are and why gov't action doesn’t align with the overwhelming public interest are all rich territory for reporting. #the89percent

In Hamburg, Germany, nearly 600,000 people voted in two referendums this past weekend. “The ‘future referendum’ for climate protection... garnered more than 300,000 votes,” and the city government must now “must now take significantly stricter action on climate issues.” #the89percent

The goal of this phase of #The89Percent Project is to present a vivid, factually grounded portrait of the global climate majority in all its diversity and potential.
However, most of them don’t realize that they are the overwhelming majority, and therefore they don’t act, vote, or speak out. The next phase of #The89Percent Project explores the people behind the numbers: Who are they? Are they surprised they’re the majority? What climate policies do they want?
The same spirit animates #The89Percent Project. Launched in April, the project’s initial reporting highlighted the fact that 80 to 89% of the world’s people want their governments to take stronger climate action.
At Thursday's Talking Shop, journalists interested in participating in #The89Percent Project can swap ideas with journalists from @theguardian.com and other CCNow partners about how to gather candid, revealing answers from your audiences and the general public.
