Image versus identity is a useful way of understanding the pressures marginalized people face. Being constantly expected to appear effortless, while simultaneously receiving the message that our natural state was unacceptable, meant we could never relax. Many of us developed into a persona, instead of a person. And now the project before us is to try to retrofit ourselves into an identity that has always been marked by a need to curate for the consumption of others.

Marginalized groups do marginalize other groups, and this isn’t rare or accidental. This is how power and privilege protect themselves in this country. The few people in a marginalized group who have achieved success often become the strictest gatekeepers of the systems of power that formerly kept them out. This is what respectability politics tries to sell us: that if we can simply prove to whiteness that we are worthy on their terms, they have to let us in. This doesn’t work. And never will. But people have always tried to win equality in this way.

This is such an engaging and insightful book
