Have you felt it? Perhaps you long for limbs you weren’t born with. Maybe you dream of scales and feathers where there is skin. Do you secretly hope when you fall asleep that you will wake up something else? Something not Human? You might be Therioqueer. What’s Therioqueerness? Queerness has a long, storied history. One useful way to think about it comes from feminist author Judith Butler: to be Queer is to trouble. Queerness is a destructive, subversive force that dissolves conventional norms of sex and gender and power. Therioqueerness radically seeks to extend this understanding of queerness towards nonhuman identities. Let’s ask a million dollar question. What is a Human? Is it a creature that has two arms, two legs, and a head? Some cognitive superiority (whatever that means) to other living things? Tool making? Paying taxes? In truth, a Human is a construct. Humanity is made up! Did the colonizers who bled Africa dry consider the People who lived there Humans? Of course not! They turned to their holy books and found reasons why the Humans they oppressed were not Human at all. That Humanity may be assigned or revoked by power structures neatly demonstrates the artifice at work. Human is a created category, not a fundamental property inherent to Personhood. So what of us who never felt kinship with this construct Humanity to begin with? Who are we People that are not Human? Myriad terms have been coined to describe our liminal experience. Some call us Alterhumans, others Therians, and yet more use Otherkin to describe our identities. All of these are useful terms and I will not disparage them. However, I believe these terms fail to make a crucial connection with wider Queer thought and thus limit the ways we may think about Nonhumanity. Enter Therioqueer. A portmanteau of the greek therion (wild animal, beast) and Queer to describe the fusion of these two concepts into one whole. To be Therioqueer is to Queer (trouble) the Human. Every Catboy, Doggirl, Gende…
This is a much older piece of writing, and reading through it we'd probably restate or edit some points. Oh well.
