#WEBDuBois was born on #ThisDayInHistory in 1868. Across a long life he was an #antiracist activist and the first Black #Harvard PhD. His short book #TheSoulsOfBlackFolk, his work on #Reconstruction, and his appeal to the UN against US #HumanRights violations remain important.

"The Souls of Black Folk" is one of his most read books. It introduced Du Bois’ concept of “double consciousness.” One consciousness was being Black, the other, being an American, which – Du Bois said – required seeing one’s self through the lens of a bitterly racist society. He referred to this as “two-ness,” the inner conflict faced by Americans of color when trying to navigate a dual identity.
Quoting Du Bois, it was a sense of “always looking at one’s self through the eyes of others and holding two warring ideals in one dark body.”

Of course it wasn’t only in the United States. Du Bois also wrote extensively about racist segregation and global systems of colonialism and white supremacy. His work connected American racism to worldwide oppression.
As a social scientist, Du Bois conducted a study in the late-1890s titled "The Philadelphia Negro." He wanted to know more about the problems that plagued African-American communities. Many social critics of the time accused Black biology and character for the crime and poverty often endemic in Black communities.

Focusing on the 7th Ward of Philadelphia, Du Bois documented the significant hurdles Black people had to overcome to access even a basic level of education. He also found widespread drug addiction and illness among residents of the 7th Ward – imposed, to some degree, by city leaders who were not Black. Summarizing The Philadelphia Negro study, Du Bois wrote, “The Negro problem looked at in one way is but the old world questions of ignorance, poverty, crime, and the dislike of the stranger.”
