#TBBPrompt time again! This week brings us the word vestigial, which took me no few moments to understand. I'm feeling very Not Smart™ today.

That said, I found a perfect example from a recent scene added to The Forgotten Princess.

Laura Siadak's art Orn and Laela from The Backwards Knigh. Orn stands facing away from the camera, holding his sword, blood dripping from his hand. A blue spiral pattern marks his left bicep. Laela stares at the camera, back to Orn, holding a bow and arrow.

Corrected sketch for Orn and Laela, from @fallenlights.net. The other one was rough and this one is worlds better. 🙃

These two goofs are from The Backwards Knight.

Snippet image, white text on dark gray background that reads:

I stood looking at the precipice before me, in the light cast by…nothing. Where a pillar should stand, there should be something. I searched for the existence of one, and I could feel it calling to me.

But no, the shape of the world beyond lay out a pattern of a pillar where there stood none.

The absence, the nothing, became something.

A ledge.

I whispered. “Trust. And fall.”

I stepped forward. And fell.

Did some drafting/editing tonight on The Forgotten Princess. Life is somewhat nearing normalcy, or what passes for it, and I've had Orn and Laela clamoring for attention in my head.

Image of The Backwards Knight sitting on a faded, murky wooden surface. Below is a black text box with white text that reads:

“I’ve already told you that my life is forfeit if I return empty-handed,” she spat, taking a step toward him. “I am coming with you, and there will be no arguing otherwise. If we succeed, you can keep the reward. I have no need for it.”

“What’s your name?” Orn asked, resigned. It seemed he was stuck with her for the time being, so they might as well introduce themselves. When she did not reply, Orn sighed. “Come on, princess, I’ll need to know your name eventually.”

“Laela. And stop calling me princess. I am no princess."

“Your ears are smoking something fierce.” Laela spoke before he could. “Please do not overburden your poor brain on my account.”

“Well, excuse me, princess,” Orn groused. “I’ve been stuck out here on my own so long, I’m afraid I’m not used to such stimulating company. But I figured we might compare notes. Why Swanford? Why the bounty in Redford and Ostford? Why are there marks—” Orn stopped himself, worrying for a moment he had divulged too much information. “You’ve seen the marks, right?”

Image of a paper-wrapped copy of The Backwards Knight sitting on a faded, murky wooden surface. Below is a black text box with white text that reads:

Thing is, I was too late. The torch flared life briefly, and there was a mural on the wall: a vivid spiral, blue and dancing. And then the darkness came again. And again, and again, slamming into me with intense force. Maybe it did move like water against a rock, against a man dumb enough to fight the darkness with an ancient sword.

Image of a paper-wrapped copy of The Backwards Knight sitting on a faded, murky wooden surface. Below is a black text box with white text that reads:

“Fucking elf. I don’t understand why he always dotes on you, giving you the lively hunts.” It was a knight, a guard of the palace. His words were angry, the vitriol pouring through the narrow slits of his helm.

Quick like a viper, she was in front of him and had the dagger pressed against his neck.

“Do I need to make an example of you?”

“You would not dare. The Paladin—” The knight squealed as Laela increased the pressure at the blade’s tip.
“Would lecture me and send me on my way. And you’d be dead.” Laela paused, eying him from head to toe, then smirked. “Run along now.” Laela withdrew the dagger just enough for the knight to dart away.

Today's snippet comes from the very angry, very stabby, dagger-toting, no-nonsense-taking character, that of Laela. Not a princess, stuck with Orn, what's an elf to do?

A whole metric crap-ton of a lot of stabbing, if she had her way. Thankfully, she doesn't, at least...not *yet*.

“That cannot be. These are simply not normal people. They are mages.” An unasked question hung in the air between them, and Orn wasn’t certain he would have the answer.

Orn shrugged. “If you say so. If it quacks like a duck, flies like a duck, and you don’t stop to talk to it before threatening to stab it, then I suppose that’s what it is. I’ve lost count of how many, but I’ll say this again: not one of them asked for this. Not one of them was a mage, as you describe it. Quack, quack, princess.”

"How many have there been?"

Orn scrubbed a hand over his face, feeling the conversation slip out of his grasp.

“Do you hang them?” Gaulf persisted.

“No. Wouldn’t wish a death like that on anyone.” Orn shook his head. He looked away, toward his horse, where his sword was still wrapped up in his bedroll. Probably for the best, but he itched to feel the hilt in his fingers.

“That’s good.” A pause, before Gaulf continued, wringing his hands. “I didn’t want to hang.” Orn could see the words written on his face, the ones that wanted to spill forth. Something kept them burbling just beneath the surface.

“It’s time to tell me your story, Gaulf.”
