🌎 Boat-billed Heron (Cochlearius cochlearius) The Boat-billed Heron is a stocky, medium-sized heron recognizable by its massive, broad, scoop-like black bill and prominent black crest. Adults have pale gray to white plumage with a chestnut belly and black flanks. It's distributed in mangrove swamps and wooded margins of freshwater wetlands across Central and South America (from Mexico to Brazil). This heron is primarily nocturnal, roosting silently by day, and foraging at night. It hunts by standing still or slowly stalking, using its unique bill to scoop up fish, crustaceans, and insects in shallow water.
