Minidriders in the wild have drastically shortened lifespans when found on the surface due to predators and starvation. They are diurnal species in the Underdark but have very poor eyesight in the sun, leaving them unable to effectively escape danger and they can't properly hunt for food. There haven't been enough that have survived on the surface to breed & adjust to being nocturnal. Minidriders are considered an exotic species and are regulated / protected under the Underdark Safety Act passed and established in 2007. Have to be certified to own a minidrider with understanding that they’re highly destructive (some more than others) and have high care needs since they are still technically wild animals, regardless if they were found in the wild or if they were hatched in one of the labs. When minidriders were found to be coming to the surface more often for reasons unknown (it's speculated that something underground is threatening their territories, so they are going to the surface to escape), their numbers in the wild have been dwindling and they were placed on the endangered species list in 2005. In an attempt to spread awareness of the benefits of minidriders and to save the species (and to possibly produce a successful nocturnal or sun-tolerant variant), Underdark Co. began establishing labs and stores across most major cities (in late 2007 after the Underdark Safety Act was passed), offering up certification and adoption of lab-hatched minidriders and certification to own wild caught minidriders. Every minidrider that is lab-hatched is ethically produced. Underdark Co. hasn't yet revealed their methods of minidrider mating / egg sac production as they don't want uncertified breeding which would potentially result in unhealthy/diseased/malformed minidriders. Minidrider egg sacs require a very particular environment for healthy hatching via specific incubation machines not available to the general public that mimic the optimal Underdark hatching environment.
There are a couple of ways you can get a minidrider - You can apply to adopt one that is already hatched, or you can apply to 'adopt' an egg. For the egg, you will be required to go in at least once a week to talk to the egg (they say it helps with post-hatching bonding, because the minidrider will recognise your voice and react with less aggression). After approximately 2 months, the eggs usually hatch and you'll have to be present for this. You can either watch the egg hatch, or hold it as it hatches (this is safe and they actually suggest doing this so that the minidrider can immediately start bonding).
They'll send you home with the minidrider and some starter supplies, such as food & water dish, a bag of Drider Bites™, and care instructions. After that, they'll e-mail you when they need you to bring your minidrider in for check-ups and yearly photos for their archives. The application process usually takes about a month for approval, as they assess your living situation, schedule, and general demeanour. Underdark Co. will quickly approve your application if: - you are living alone or with one other person (minidriders are fiercely loyal and territorial, and could be stressed out if there are too many people around) - you have a spacious apartment or home that isn't cluttered (they run around a lot and destroy stuff) - you are a generally calm, patient person with a non-violent criminal history (minidriders will try your patience) - you work/study from home or are otherwise mostly at home (they have bad separation anxiety when bonded with their caretaker) Most minidriders get along with other animals, especially if introduced early. If you have pets, it's better to adopt an egg so the minidrider and your pets can get used to one another from the start; and if you have no pets, you can either adopt an egg or an already hatched minidrider, as already hatched minidriders do best in a single pet home.
If you come across a minidrider in the wild, far from any known entrance to the Underdark, safely trap it and take it to the closest Underdark Veterinarian Hospital (open 24/7) for a health assessment. If the minidrider is healthy, you can apply to keep it. If the minidrider is unwell or you don't want to keep it, they can take it to one of their minidrider rehabilitation facilities. Usually if the minidrider is found near one of the many known Underdark entrances, it's best to leave them be unless they are injured or are otherwise in some kind of distress beyond normal minidrider behaviour. Minidrider care products are only available in the Underdark Co. stores, as they are specifically made for minidriders and follow all minidrider safety regulations. If you find any minidrider care products in other general stores or pet stores, please report it to your local Underdark Co. as they are not certified to produce or sell minidrider products since bootleg minidrider products can pose a danger to your minidrider.
