June 2016. 4 generations of Lewis men. All sharing a first (Thomas) and last name. I wish we could recreate the photo, but Big Grandpa left us 6 years ago and passed the baton to me. The love and faithfulness of God will endure when everyone here is ancient history. #todaysverse #discoverYourAmazing

How can judgment be a reason for joyful celebration? Because God’s judgment is ultimately restorative, not destructive. Because He comes to set things right for everyone—including all of creation. #todaysverse #discoverYourAmazing

Can just anyone see God’s glory by looking into a starry sky? Yes. Does everyone recognize it? No. That doesn’t mean it’s not there for everyone. God has done His part. #todaysverse #discoverYourAmazing

Every “old favorite” song was once new. If we ever reach a place in life where we refuse to sing new songs or experience new ways of connecting with God, we prove that it is our preferences, not Jesus, that have become our objective of worship. #todaysverse #discoverYourAmazing

In times when things seem out of control, it is important to remember and repeat our firm conviction that God has not abdicated his throne. The Psalmist was not writing about his immediate circumstances, but about the eternal nature of God. #todaysverse #discoverYourAmazing

This is my vision as I’m a few months away from Medicare (as my mailbox constantly reminds me): To be fresh and green, still bearing fruit, still pursuing and proclaiming the Kingdom and the King for as long as there is breath in my lungs. #todaysverse #discoverYourAmazing

“Dwells” is the word that grabbed my attention in Psalm 91 this morning. What is it to dwell in the shelter of the Most High? Maybe the simplest way to say it is “stay.” Live in His presence. Don’t hurry in and out. Just. Stay. #todaysverse #discoverYourAmazing

We can choose how we approach the day. Do we begin our day acknowledging and setting our minds on the mercy of God? Or do we immediately begin focusing and obsessing on the craziness in the world? God cannot satisfy a heart that refuses to be satisfied. #todaysverse #discoverYourAmazing

One amazingly beautiful thing about engaging with scripture every day is that I never can anticipate what word or phrase will capture my attention. Today it is “learned.” It seems we often want the results apart from the posture of learner/disciple/apprentice. There is no other way. #todaysverse

If our study of the word of God doesn’t lead us to desire to learn the ways of God and result in reverence and praise, then we study amiss. #todaysverse #discoverYourAmazing

When heaven and earth (God and His people) meet in sacred embrace, there is the place God showers His blessings. But we must resist all faithless entanglements and agendas. #todaysverse #discoverYourAmazing

Sometimes the “silence” of God is deafening. Somebody’s praying a prayer like this today and afraid to admit it because they’ll be accused of doubting/questioning God. May I suggest that this desperate prayer reveals more faith than a shallow “everything’s gonna be fine” proclamation? #todaysverse

We have at least 3 options in regards to those who are oppressed. We can be defenders and rescuers. We can be oppressors. We can be oblivious. Only one of those options bears God’s stamp of approval. #todaysverse #discoverYourAmazing

This prayer appears throughout the Psalms. And it is a worldwide prayer today. Desperate people clinging to faith by a fraying thread. Our Christian platitudes don’t help. We can only join them in clinging to Jesus. #todaysverse #discoverYourAmazing

In the pens and pastures, God was preparing David to be the kind of king He wanted to lead His people. David didn’t OVERCOME his background and upbringing. God used it for His own purposes. #todaysverse #discoverYourAmazing

Because I get my protein from the grocery store, “mountains rich with game” is not a phrase I would use in comparison with the majesty of God. But in the world of the psalmist, plentiful game was an amazing gift. What phrase would you use? #todaysverse #discoverYourAmazing

I love learning. Books are my friends. Podcasts are my frequent traveling companions. But, if what I learn leads me to a sense of superiority over those who don’t have the “knowledge” I have, my learning does more harm than good. #todaysverse #discoverYourAmazing

Do you ever feel like you are possessed by your possessions? That you make critical decisions based on acquiring more stuff—or at least not losing the stuff you’ve already acquired? Do you choose stuff over relationships? Maybe some self-examination is in order. #todaysverse #discoverYourAmazing

I came to know Jesus personally in 1969, at the age of 7. I now have 3 grandchildren older than that. Through every part of this journey, He has been faithful. #todaysverse #discoverYourAmazing

Here’s a thought: Perhaps we get frustrated in the seeking because we haven’t yet developed the capacity to rejoice WHILE we’re seeking. If we can only say, “God is great” AFTER our prayers have been answered, we’ll spend a lot more time in frustration and despair. #todaysverse #discoverYourAmazing

Notice that the Psalmist doesn’t expect God’s answer because of his own goodness. He doesn’t remind God of his worthiness of God’s intervention. He falls on God’s mercy and love. #todaysverse #discoverYourAmazing

It occurred to me in reading this verse this morning that there is a direct correlation between righteousness and a capacity for joy. It seems that we sometimes think the madder we are, the righter we are. #todaysverse #discoverYourAmazing

I love the way David goes from testimony to exhortation/invitation in these verses. It’s a good pattern: Here’s what trusting God is for me and I invite you to join me in this journey of trusting Him. #todaysverse #discoverYourAmazing

The Lord has blessed me with the opportunity to publicly sing His praises in 15 different countries. But just as significant are the “peoples” among whom I’ve praised without ever getting on a plane or a ship. Everybody needs to know His goodness and faithfulness. #todaysverse #discoverYourAmazing

Fear is a powerful motivator. It’s just not a good one. What we fear reveals more about us than it does about the objects of our fears. That’s why those who trade in fear keep offering us their clickbait hot takes. There has always been a better way. #todaysverse #discoverYourAmazing

This was not a platitude spoken by someone who hadn’t been through hard times. He’d been there. He was there. He knew he’d be there again. This was the firm foundation of his ultimate trust in God. #todaysverse #discoverYourAmazing

This verse does not appear in isolation. The Psalmist begins with a plea for God’s help in the present and ends with a remembrance of God’s help in the past. It’s good to remember that God is the same in all times. #todaysverse #discoverYourAmazing
