In 2022, CEH purchased and tested almost 2,000 shoes, handbags, wallets, and belts suspected of containing lead from 63 Ross and 15 Burlington storefronts across California.

We found that approximately 27% of fashion accessories we purchased contained lead levels exceeding 300 ppm, triple the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC’s) current legal lead limit for lead in children’s products.

There is no safe level of lead!

Our report shows that in 2022, more than 1 in 4 of the fashion accessories we purchased from Ross and Burlington contained high levels of lead.

Exposure to lead can cause cancer, reproductive issues, and neurological harm.

There is no safe level of lead exposure.

Over the last decade, CEH has notified off-price retailers Burlington, Marshalls, Nordstrom Rack, Ross, and TJ Maxx nearly 500 times that they were selling specific fashion accessories containing elevated levels of lead.

Ross and Burlington accounted for over 300 of those notices and must clean up their supply chains to protect their customers’ health.

Over the last decade, CEH has notified off-price retailers Burlington, Marshalls, Nordstrom Rack, Ross, and TJ Maxx nearly 500 times that they were selling specific fashion accessories containing elevated levels of lead. Ross and Burlington accounted for over 300 of those notices and must clean up their supply chains to protect their customers’ health.

Since 2009, our testing repeatedly found high levels of lead in leather and faux leather fashion accessories such as handbags, wallets, shoes, and belts sold at off-price retailers.
