Should the existence of Friendly Local Games Stores affect game design?

Do we even need shops in the modern age? Let’s shelve that and assume we’re better off as society in with some analogue stores where people can meet in the meat world and physically interact with product.

Dice Labels: The Heart of the Motif Approach Thinking About Dice Labels and Narrative Dice in Motif Also check out the free RPG I was inspired to share from my slushpile by this post! When it comes to TTRPGs, rolling dice is often about success and failure. But what if the dice could do more? What if they could weave a rich, story-driv

Core to the Motif approach is dice labels (or "flavors" in Motif-speak). It's really one of my favorite things! (And I love seeing other designers use dice labels.) Each die is a unique factor. Explore these #TTRPGThoughts with me!

How do you avoid spoilers?

I went to the cinema the other day to watch Project Hail Mary. There was a f*cking trailer for Spider-Man: Brand new day. I have had some wonderful surprises spoilt by trailers. I’ve been trying to actively avoid them.

How do you engage all 5 senses playing TTRPGs?

Sight - you can describe what PCs see. You can print & hold up images of what they see.

Sound - you can tell them what they hear. You can give NPCs distinctive voices. Apps exist to create/play ambient sounds & music for TTRPGs.

#TTRPGThoughts What's your ideal game session length? In high school, when free time flowed like water, it was up to 6 or 7 hours for me, but as an adult, I feel like the sweet spot has settled around 3-4 hours.

How do you know what to bring to a convention?

I’m trying to go to a TTRPG convention every weekend in 2026. There was nothing on for Easter weekend β€˜natch.

But there’s a Science Fiction convention on at the NEC & it says its got a games room & TTRPGs.

So I’m going to that.

I am responsible for the ephemeral nature of more characters than any other media.

It’s a threat given many times in SciFi. β€œYou won’t die. It’ll be as if you never existed.”

Even if the threat is carried out, the character still exists in the 1st part of book movie.

Designed to succeed? What are the benefits/drawbacks of Cost vs. Failure?

There was a period in my life where I went to a weekly pub quiz. It was bloody easy. Almost everyone in the pub got scores in the 80th percentile. I (the person I went with wasn’t that bright*)…..

Am I supposed to REMEMBER everything I’ve written?

You guys out there that play 100s of different games and can keep all those different systems square in your head, you have my admiration.

I can’t even remember the rules for the games I’ve written.

What a difference an β€œi” makes.

When I’m typing up a game (I still do a few minutes some days) an easy typo I’ve noticed which can totally change the meaning of a passage is RUN and RUIN.

β€œI’m going to RUN a game tonight.”

β€œI’m going to RUIN a game tonight.”

Tell me there’s a Steampunk game out there that already does this so I don’t have worry about writing it.

I once wrote a simple Superhero game. In playtest someone informed me I hadn’t written a Superhero game, I’d written a generic one.

What’s the best game framework to introduce new people to #TTRPG? I vote for classic D&D, but is this just nostalgia?

My introduction to TTRPGs was an article the (UK) Steve Jackson in Games & Puzzles Magazine. It a description of this new form of gaming. Plus a dungeon.

#TTRPGThoughts What's the hardest game rule for you to keep straight? It seems simple enough on paper, but Lancer's "no repeat actions" rule drives me up a wall.

How many ways ARE there to open a door?

Maybe it’s nostalgia but I like introducing players to #TTRPGs with a classic D&D-type template.

I’d explain but I need to get my point into this 1st post - for once!

A key moment is when I say.

β€œThere’s a door. You can open it….

Don’t give TTRPG players what they want. They donβ€˜t want that.

β€œIt’s not a perfect system.” Said a game designer of his game in a recent conversation.

Of course the standard answer to that is:

β€œThere’s no such thing as a perfect system.” This is obviously true.

Do any other designers get muddled up between all their different games or is it just me?

In my β€œCode” games there are three different hit points:

Health, Headlines, Heroism for Superheroes
Resilience, Reason, Renown for SciFi
Fortitude, Faculty, Form for Steampunk

Powered by the Apocalypse - SOME thoughts - β€œco-authorship”.

I am a miser. I donβ€˜t enjoy reading game rules. I realise that brings into question my legitimacy as a game designer but there you go.

I like to discover games through play but that depends upon the referee….

Where could you have given a bit more help to players as a designer and author?

In my Code games I try to give copious help to players and readers. Currently and in the future I give pregens a and a simple scenario up front so you can get playing quickly.

Examples to give validation for my β€œstoryline” rules.

I have a rule in my β€œCode” games. It isn’t intrinsic to the rest of the rules. I don’t use it in one hour games. I’ve never seen anyone else use it. I have several mutual on here who have read and actually play my games….

#TTRPGThoughts I feel like there's less room to be surprised when building a character in TTRPGs than a lot of other story structures. In a "crunchy" system, you know what features you'll get later without any potential to discover "hidden talents."

What RPG systems DO facilitate that kind of play?

Balance encounters to fit dramatic circumstances or keep to the written stats?

I’m on the bus so posting of this thread via my iPhone may be intermittent.

Us daily posters need to stick to a few key examples for ease.

Something came up in one of my sessions this weekend.

Accepting face to face feed back - an issue.

You get feedback on your games so rarely. Ftf feedback in this country is rare. We are so hung up on being polite and under-stated. It’s still part of our individual natures. John Cleese (co)wrote an (official DC) β€œwhat if” comic.
