What about avoiding petty and serious crime as they age, or respect for authority? We are on the brink of anarchy, so if the kids are proto-anarchic civilization will fall.

True uniqueness in a pack is uncommon. What is uncommon has power. Someone who is not a leader but is unique is a threat to the hierarchy and cannot gain the trust of their peers. They are "weird." If they can become a leader all is well.

I am critical of popular things, but I don't see what's wrong with [collaborative] management of power grids.

If the powers that be really hate that, they could ban consumer solar panels and windmill farms, set up their own, sell the energy to people, and ban fossil fuels.
