At that time, present-day Dortmund was located on the equator, and the climate was tropical, humid, and warm. In the vast swampland between the coast and an extensive mountain range, forests of tree-high horsetails and clubmosses grew. Giant insects buzzed among the plants, and millipedes several meters long crawled about. The Carboniferous period also holds special significance for the Ruhr region: Over the course of geological history, the remains of these plants formed massive coal seams. The Carboniferous period ended 296 million years ago.

It's unbelievably warm 15°C (or more?) in the evening at the moment.
