Samuel B. Bassett Scholarship in Labor Relations
Eligibility: Undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a labor-related career
Established to memorialize long-time Seattle labor lawyer Samuel B. Bassett, this scholarship awards $4,500 to an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a career in labor relations. Samuel Bassett (1896-1971) was a Seattle plaintiffs lawyer who practiced with George Vandeveer from 1924-1942 and represented the Industrial Workers of the World, the Joint Council of Teamsters, No. 28 and other Teamster locals, as well as many civil rights and civil liberties cases.

Eligibility: First-year undergraduate or graduate students of any year, who qualify for financial aid
Founded through the efforts of the Inlandboatmen’s Union, Region 37, this scholarship honors Silme Domingo and Gene Viernes, two inspiring leaders of the Seattle labor movement. The Domingo-Viernes Scholarship provides $6,000 in financial support to either graduate students or entering first-year or transfer students to the UW who are committed to the principles of justice and equality and have demonstrated financial need.

Labor and Employment Relations Association (LERA) Scholarship
Eligibility: Undergraduate or graduate students
The Northwest chapter of the Labor and Employment Relations Association (LERA) generously funds an annual $1,000 scholarship for students, graduate or undergraduate, who are committed to pursuing a profession in labor and/or labor management.

Martha H. Duggan Fellowship in Caring Labor
Eligibility: Graduate students studying and/or providing caring labor
This Fellowship was created in 2004 to honor the memory of Martha H. Duggan, who provided essential support to her husband, Robert Duggan. This fellowship acknowledges that Bob’s life work would have been impossible without the caring labor of his life partner. The fellowship has a value of $10,000 to be applied to tuition costs or provide support living expenses, books, fees, and other educational expenses.

This scholarship was created in 1997 to honor him and his wife and their dedication to the labor movement. The award provides $5,500 in financial support to outstanding undergraduates at the UW who demonstrate a commitment to labor research or practice.

The Frank Jenkins, Jr. Fellowship in Labor Studies honors and preserves Jenkins’ lifelong commitment to the causes of social and economic justice by providing financial support for undergraduate and/or graduate students at the University of Washington. The award provides $6,000 in financial support, split over two years, to students who demonstrate commitment to the principles of justice, equality, and diversity.
