thinking about how verrot and marion are grim inversions of one another. two die cast from similar molds but rolled with different outcomes. both having childhoods marked by hardship, both coming to rule a house that they were never meant to live to inherit.

pregnancy as horror is a touchstone in odynia, especially in illsvale. conception, creation, these things stand in opposition and yet alignment with the plague of undeath that has warped the world. in illsvale, this is oft-centered around their tourney of torture.

while walkelin is the more obvious contender, I want to focus on verrot as death in flesh and a boy raised in the dual-faiths of excessus (from his mother) and fossent (from his father) : death, darkness, departure, excess, interment. images of death, "limit," libations, are arousing.
it’s worse that his magic actually smells like black licorice (anise, fennel, osmorhiza, etc) and burning bones. like that is a longstanding #verrotlore fact older than this already-old iteration of his character

verrot enjoys actual mind control. he enjoys the total surrender another experiences under his ward, the automatic motion propelled by subconscious desire. and that's where the pleasure is : knowing they want it. that he's reached past the pomp and circumstance to their unspoken want.
