Day 5
Picked up a smooth stone
That had a jeweled tone
Surprised to find out
Other side like grout
With color like mud
Again picked a dud
Hard to trust myself
Put me on the shelf

A month long trip across many a state
Such a variety of sights to amaze
Covered bridge, Indian mounds, St. Louis Arch
Wizard of Oz, Dodge City cattle march
Left Four Corners and soon earth stuns and lauds
At the feet of the Valley of the Gods

Being brave and wading out
At low tide, wonder about
How much further must I go
Ankles freezing as I slow
That is a very chill breeze
Finally my frozen knees
Quarter mile slogged not swum

Sit alone in the dark just before dawn
Left hand stifling my overtired yawn
Early seagull sounding like mournful clown
Flying around the softly sleeping town
Hearing the waves gently thumping the shore
Buoy’s bell warning those planning to moor
Photograph taken at Needham Lake, Suffolk today. There has been no adjustment to this photo - it is just as it was taken by the camera. A quiet backwater of this lake (that formed in an old grit quarry) meanders through thick trees giving a mystical and fairy world feel to the scene as lime-green algae covers the waters. The water appears bright green and magical. Just out of shot ducks were skimming the surface with their beaks collecting the algae and leaving a trail of clear water in their wake. In the poem that I have added to this post, traditional local folklore is borrowed in the form of hobby lanterns - fairies with lights (or will-o’-the-wisp like characters) that hop from bank to lure travellers into marshes, river backwaters or meres.

She rises unseen
In backwater hush
Where acrid mists steam
Veiling the pit
On waters that swell
A lime‑green blanket
Disguising her Hell
Fairy lights play
To lure you astray
Slimy, cold bile
Her fairy‑dust smile
