Long ago Zwart Water lay in an open dune landscape where the wind had free rein. Sand was blown away down to a hard layer in the subsoil. This didnΒ΄t allow water to pass through giving rise to a fen. Peat or turf developed here giving the water a dark colour. Hence the name. #walkingisfun

It must be absolutely lovely here when the heather is in bloom. At the moment, there’s mainly silence, the chirping of birds and the bleating of sheep. #bearinBelgium #walkingisfun

There's not much to see in St. Lenaarts. But there is a pub for a post-walk lubrication. #bearinBelgium #walkingisfun #smallbearsneedbeer

In St. Lenaarts there is a nativity scene with two real donkeys. I haven't decided yet whether I find that cute or sad. #bearinBelgium #walkingisfun

The village centre of Humelgem is dominated by the Romanesque St. Catherine's Church. In the churchyard, there is a tombstone of Roelant Martyn, Lord of the feudal court of Wyckhuysen, dating from 1554. #bearinBelgium #walkingisfun

The Duifhuis or Vleug in the hamlet of Humelgem was probably built between 1495 and 1508 and served as an observation post for the castle "Ter Ham". From the tower, messages could be sent to the castle at the slightest sign of danger. #bearinBelgium #walkingisfun

Steenokkerzeel is what is known as a 'street village'. It is literally cut in two by the provincial road 'Mechelen-Waterloo'. Here, we will do the Ter Ham walk. #bearinBelgium #walkingisfun

You can see the Fauconniers Mill from afar. It is a tower mill built in 1845 along the road from Brussels to Ghent. Originally, it was an oil and grain mill. #bearinBelgium #walkingisfun

The name of the Four Extremes walking route refers to the four parishes of Impe, Wanzele, Smetlede-Oordegem and Serskamp. It was a beautiful autumn day. #bearinBelgium #walkingisfun
