Long ago Zwart Water lay in an open dune landscape where the wind had free rein. Sand was blown away down to a hard layer in the subsoil. This didn´t allow water to pass through giving rise to a fen. Peat or turf developed here giving the water a dark colour. Hence the name. #walkingisfun

The Duifhuis or Vleug in the hamlet of Humelgem was probably built between 1495 and 1508 and served as an observation post for the castle "Ter Ham". From the tower, messages could be sent to the castle at the slightest sign of danger. #bearinBelgium #walkingisfun
