In 1943, Robert M. Coates, art critic for The New Yorker (and coiner of the term "Abstract Expressionism") called Quirt "the most impassioned artist alive today." Walter Quirt was employed by WPA Federal Arts Project for seven years. His works are held in the collections of the museums of modern art in San Francisco and New York City as well the Smithsonian and the Whitney.
