#30daymapchallenge Day 4: My Data
I'm more of a slow mapper than a map-a-day-er but lo and behold—I'm producing data today. Working up a new split primary palette for a much-anticipated final painting #handmademap #watercolormap
Just finished the first layer of shadows on my current #watercolormap - trying out a #timelapse for the first time!

#WatercolorMap of a wholly imaginary island this time, cobbled together from different parts of #WesternAustralia.
Stay tuned for more on this one in a later post!

More scenes from the atmospheric and endangered páramo landscape (with Dr. Seuss-like Espeletia pycnophylla/“fraillejones”) of El Ángel, Ecuador - an “ecological island” that inspired the #watercolormap in my previous post!

Today’s featured #WatercolorMap, “Lagoon.” inspired by the surreal and endangered paramo of El Angel, #Ecuador. As usual it’s an accentuated ecological “island,” a mosaic of landscape & aerial views. More on this one in a later post!

An unfinished watercolor map on textured paper depicts a wyvern-shaped island in shades of yellow and orange, surrounded by a blue ocean. The island’s contours naturally form the shape of a wyvern with an elongated body, outstretched wings, and a curved head with a horn-like extension. The watercolor blending gives the land a soft, organic appearance, with subtle shading hinting at elevation changes. The surrounding ocean consists of layered blue tones, adding depth. Some areas appear less refined, indicating the map is still in progress. The edges of the paper show slight paint bleed.
The same unfinished watercolor map, but with deeper red and orange hues added to the island, giving the land a richer, more varied appearance. The wyvern shape remains distinct, with the wings, tail, and head clearly outlined by the natural contours. The ocean maintains its layered blue tones, enhancing the sense of depth. The painting still shows signs of being a work in progress, with some areas appearing less refined. The watercolor technique continues to create a soft, blended effect, and the edges of the paper show slight paint bleed.
A watercolor WIP I’m admittedly struggling with.
I ended up snapping a photo and pulling it into procreate to test some edits.
I want to add wyvern features but it still look like an island?
Still noodling on this one…
