Fred expressed concern about Marissa’s erratic behaviour, trying every conceivable tactic to get her to calm down. He first rolled around on the freshly ironed black slacks so that the appropriate amount of non-removable hair had been applied before crawling into the bathroom sink, forcing her to brush her teeth in the kitchen, and making sure to be underfoot no matter where she tried to stand. Fred thought it was for her own good; evidently, she did not really understand cats. Those slacks didn’t work with that top anyway. At 6:01, she got the message that he was here, checking her look one last time, she told Fred, “See you later,” and left the apartment. They exchanged mature pleasantries about how lovely she was and how handsome he looked, and how much they’d been looking forward to this night, while enjoying the short drive. While they knew that there would be a different degree of elegance when you have wing sauce on your face, age has less to do with elegance than it does with acceptance, and both had a certain lack of table manners, which came from being older and eating alone.

Marissa is trying to get ready for a date, Fred is just trying to help.

Damn, those things make me jealous of blind people.” “Don’t let Trinda hear you talk like that.” Doobie smiled. “Hear me say what?” A loud voice called from downstairs. “Bernie was saying how much he admired your duffle bags.” “And why would I not want to hear that?” Trinda spoke slowly as she stood, blocking the stairs. “Because I thought you might have gone back to bed.” Doobie lied quickly. “Yeah, they are perfect for what I need, and they look great. I was going to take three.” “Take? They’re gonna cost you ten bucks each.” Bernie felt caught between a rock and a crazy place as he reached for his wallet. Trinda finally smiled as Bernie passed her forty dollars. “You may as well take another one because I don’t have any change.”
