Jeanette McCurdy is a writing-ass bitch.

First lines from the story "We Men of Science": My wife was eleven months pregnant at the time, which always seemed to me an awful lot of months to be pregnant.
#whatireadtoday
Uh... What?! Yeah, I'd say 11 months preggo is pretty far along.
I love a good first line...

I've just started reading this book and already the opening pages have been suffused with so much emotional, quirky meaning that makes me think of myself and my life and my choices.
Am I ready to be this introspective?

The cover of the memoir Careless People by Sarah Wynn Williams.
#whatireadtoday
I've been reading this memoir for a several months. I start the book, get really angry, then stop. I am determined to finish it. It's just hard to stomach what I'm reading.
I use #whatireadtoday to share what I like and why.
ALWAYS share what you're reading. What you're listening to.
I forgot to show you what I'm reading!
I keep thinking about how much drama swirled around every protest. At King's home, on the streets, in the media, in his mind...

First of all, I started this book today and I'm already 1/3 through it. Great story.
Also, the way young King treated Coretta...

What a day to read this 🧵
Meeting Liam
“Hi, are you Liam’s mam?”
“Yes”
“Sorry we’ve not met, I’m his solicitor. Are you aware the Youth Offending Team have you down as not wanting him home and refusing to support him?”
“Yes”
“But he’s only just 15”

"I was expecting the ex-cops...But there was also an Ohio OB-GYN on the national board of directors...and now led a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group...a city prosecutor in Utah, an ex-city council member and...a sergeant with an Illinois sheriff’s department."
As someone who has worked with and around kids my entire professional career, this feels like a prescient sentiment because I've seen it.

"I became obsessed with the writing of prison doctor Theodore Dalrymple, who convinced me the collapse of the family is the collapse of the person...If Tina had picked Vincent up that day, would Richard be alive? What would the story be if Vincent hadn’t had an absent father?"

There's an Alice in Wonderland aspect to this book. The narrator keeps running into these strange characters who astound and amaze him. While he's not American, it's just Mississippi, and it's not his first time there. 🤷🏾♀️

We'll see. The narrator seems a bit obnoxious, like the guy who knows he's being inappropriate and covers by claiming "I'm just asking questions" or by "playing devil's advocate".
I'm already skeptical of his side of the story.

Some might argue that our destinies are inextricably linked to America's fate... Our power doesn’t lie in our proximity to existing systems but in our ability to imagine, create, and sustain new ones.

On one hand, I'm disturbed by how this replicates the arguments of anti-affirmative action. On the other hand, we need to be honest about why we push AP classes.

#whatireadtoday "The problem is likely that billionaires Zuckerberg and Musk flounder in predicting what normal people want out of a social site — the former drags net-negative AI into everything, and the latter makes idiotic decisions like removing the block button."
I won't try to say anything profound about this. It's just a man describing his life to us, and I found it fascinating.
