On 3 Oct 1848, the famous #Plesiosaurus found by #MaryAnning in 1823 was sold at the auction of the possessions of the 2nd Duke of Buckingham. The 1st Duke had paid £110 for it; in 1848 Oxford geologist #WilliamBuckland bought it for the British Museum for just £8 8 shillings. #HistSci #fossils
