At the top is Hamal – the brightest star in the constellation Aries.From about 2000 to 100 BCE, Hamal aligned with the Sun during the March equinox – the moment day and night are equal, and the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading north. This made Aries one of the most important constellations in the sky, and Hamal stood at its heart.That point in the sky became known as the First Point of Aries – the celestial equivalent of the prime meridian. Astronomers used it as the zero point for measuring right ascension, a kind of celestial longitude.But Earth doesn’t spin in place. Its axis wobbles over a 26,000-year cycle, like a spinning top slowing down. This motion, called precession, causes the equinox point to drift about 1 degree every 72 years.As a result, the equinox moved westward – out of Aries and into Pisces, where it remains today. Yet the name “First Point of Aries” still lingers, a relic of a sky that no longer aligns the way it once did.Hamal itself hasn’t moved much. It’s a stable orange giant, about 66 light-years away, shining in the constellation Aries alongside Sheratan and Mesarthim.
