An unfired ceramic strawberry pot sits on a wooden board in a studio. The pot is open at the top, is maybe 18 inches tall (or perhaps a bit less), and has two tiers of pocket-like openings spaced around the sides. Each tier has 4 openings, and the two tiers are staggered so the openings on one tier sit in between openings on the other tier. Each opening is hopefully large enough for a single strawberry plant to grow out of.
My first large coil pot finished and waiting for bisque firing. I'm really pleased with it and can't wait to see how it fires. I'm hoping the textured areas pick up a lot of ash. Learned a lot and had to abandon some of my design, but the next one will be better! #pottery #woodfire #strawberrypot

This time I waited two days after throwing the 8-lb base

It was leather
.
Threw a 5-lb ring and immediately inverted it on top of the base
.
For large vessels, it's about a pound per inch in height
.

The ring section is inverted on top of the base. That's a bubble level on top of the bat holding the ring section, to aid in making sure the parts are joined plumb
Bat is now wired off the clay ring. Uh-oh. If you look carefully at the port side silhouette, you can see some slumpage agoin' on
Back to square one. The pieces were a little too wet to work but I tried to throw them higher anyway. Mistake, obviously. I tried wiring off a few inches, but the problem was really at the join. You can see the wall gets thicker intentionally toward the foot, to insure sufficient support for the weight of future clay above. The extra is trimmed off at a later, drier "leather hard" stage. Not this one, though!
