Turning a maple burl / burr. Voids are intentional to use as much wood as possible. Compared to what I've been turning recently (lignum vitae, laburnum), the maple turns like butter!

Drying a shellac sealer on the inside of this laburnum bowl. Inside still isn't as clean as I'd like, some tearout that is too deep to sand but I know if I try and fix it with a scraper or gouge I'll ruin the bowl.

I make SO many mistakes that way:

I think it’s part of the #woodturning curse. Every now and then, a piece just really wants to learn to fly! 😆

The photograph shows a small piece of thuya burl wood, with an amazing redish brown grain swirl pattern, with a big crack running through it as it has been pushed onto a lid too big for it.

You can't make thuya burl boxes without cracking a few thuya burl boxes. That's the saying I think?

Today I've mostly been #woodturning oily African hardwoods.

The two crown green woods (lignum vitae) are challenging but fun and the wood is oh so gorgeous. I cut the first one in half (with a parting tool) across the wider diameter which revealed a big crack in the centre. I turned one half.

Michael Hamilton-Clark crafted these two letter openers using a lamination technique. The blades are impressively slender, and the handles beautifully exhibit the variety of woods. #presidentschallenge #woodturner #woodturning
